Bulldog Clothes: Fitting the Widest Dog You Will Ever Try to Dress

If you’ve ever tried to put a coat on an English Bulldog, you know the problem immediately. The chest is enormous. The waist is narrow. The neck is short and thick. The face is flat. And the legs are so stocky they barely bend. Standard sizing fails completely.

Here’s what actually works.

Why Bulldogs are the hardest breed to dress

English Bulldogs have the most extreme body proportions of any common breed:

  • Chest girth: An adult male Bulldog often measures 22–28″ around the chest — similar to a dog twice their weight.
  • Waist: Narrow relative to the chest. The chest-to-waist ratio is extreme, which makes fitted garments almost impossible without an adjustable strap.
  • Back length: Short — 12–15″ for most adults. A coat long enough to cover the back will be too long in the fabric.
  • Neck: Short, thick, and wide. Most pull-over neck openings are too small.
  • Face: Flat, like the French Bulldog, which means hoods need a very deep, open construction.
  • Legs: Very short, very muscular, set wide. Leg holes that work on a normal dog may not clear a Bulldog leg at all.

Bulldog sizing guide

Weight Chest girth Back length Neck
40–50 lbs 22–25″ 12–14″ 16–18″
50–60 lbs 25–28″ 14–16″ 18–20″

Always check chest girth first. Never buy for Bulldogs based on weight alone — a 50lb Bulldog has the chest of a 70lb dog of a different breed.

What to look for specifically

  • Step-in or side-buckle closure — pulling anything over a Bulldog head is miserable for both parties. Velcro or buckle closures that open flat and wrap around the body are the only practical option for most Bulldogs.
  • Adjustable chest AND belly straps — the chest-to-waist ratio requires independent adjustment at both points.
  • Explicitly labelled for Bulldogs or brachycephalic breeds. If the product doesn’t mention Bulldogs, check reviews for fit reports.
  • Short back panel — a back length of 12–16″ in the size range that fits the chest.
  • Wide leg openings — if the garment has leg holes, they need to be significantly wider than average.

What to avoid

  • Pull-over styles of any kind
  • Tight hoods — flat faces need completely open hood construction
  • Anything sizing XS–M — Bulldogs need L–XL chest-wise regardless of their weight
  • Generic sizing charts based on weight — always measure and compare to dimensions

Practical clothing for Bulldogs

Bulldogs actually benefit from clothing more than you might think. They’re brachycephalic, which makes them temperature-sensitive. They overheat easily in warm weather and get cold faster than their stocky appearance suggests in cold weather.

The most practical categories:

  • Cooling vests for summer: Evaporative cooling vests worn wet reduce the risk of overheating in warm weather. Look for open-sided designs with minimal coverage at the face.
  • Light fleece for cold weather: A short, wide fleece with velcro closure is genuinely useful below 10°C / 50°F.
  • Bow ties and bandanas: The zero-sizing option. A bow tie clipped to the collar works on any Bulldog without any measurements.
